Board of Education of Jefferson County

This past Monday, December 14th, I attended a public board meeting of the Jefferson County Schools. These meetings are open to the public and provide a great way for citizens to participate in this vital community resource. Our children are our future, and education is one of the key factors in determining their future success life. The meeting was run very professionally and parents were able to voice their opinions and concerns and have them addressed by the board. I would like to congratulate the board for having won a competitive bid for a grant for distance learning. This grant amounted to $497,920 and was presented at the meeting by the USDA Rural Development director, Robert Lewis.

Jefferson County Black History Preservation Society

This past Sunday, December 13th, I had the pleasure of attending the premier of the new movie Road Trip to History – African Americans of Jefferson County, West Virginia. The movie was presented at Wright Denny Intermediate School in Charles Town. The event was sponsored by the Jefferson County Black History Preservation Society. Both the Society and the movie presented a convincing case that there is more black history associated with Jefferson County than anywhere else in the nation. The movie is a great achievement and is something that we can all be proud of. It was produced by Wayne Bronson of Oak Tree Productions in Kearneysville and will be aired on PBS stations in West Virginia and Virginia.
