Infrastructure can be a “chicken and egg” problem. The population of West Virginia is not growing – it has in fact declined, over the last 50 years. However, we do need to maintain our current infrastructure and improve it in anticipation of growth. We need to maintain our roads, and to build additional roads where needed.
An important aspect of infrastructure has to do with technology. For example, the state government has undertaken the project of implementing an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. ERP systems are large integrated systems that large enterprises use to enhance performance and create efficiencies. Because of the recent economic crisis, this initiative has stalled. I believe that we should continue this initiative. It would make the government more efficient with regard to services and budgeting and would save money in the long run.
