It is my belief that the pursuit of happiness is dependent on economic freedom. And unfortunately, West Virginia ranks last among the 50 states in that category as well and below some Canadian provinces. There is a study that was released in 2008 called Economic Freedom of North America by the Frazer Institute. Here are the results:

I haven’t yet found a study that concludes that economic freedom promotes happiness, but I suspect that a strong correlation exists. There are studies however, that have correlated economic freedom with economic performance.
